treatment plant-- the land of the Morlocks just on the other side of the wall at Discovery Park. Miles and Michael joined us on our tour, along with a couple of other kids. Casey Plank, the plant's cheerful outreacher, delighted the children with guessing games ('what are the four P's allowed in the toilet?') while pointing out to the geeky dads such tidbits as the converted diesel pumps, which run entirely on methane generated by the digester bacteria in the secondary treatment tanks. This was an afternoon very well spent. (But why is it so fascinating to
six year olds to bang on each others' hard hats?)The treatment plant on the one hand has the delightful complexity of pipes, tanks, tunnels and control rooms of a refinery, but on the other hand does most of its work using gravity and biology. It's an enormous stomach.
