We are stopping over for two days in our old home turf. Last night, despite severely bungled navigation from Newark, we made it in time for a magnificent New Year's Eve dinner in Philadelphia with Jake and Ellen, and their beautiful daughters Sophia and Lydia. Fabulous food and wine, and the kids watched movies upstairs all evening while we had a civilised conversation. Here's Jake slicing the brunch item: poached salmon, leeks, eggs and chanterelles baked in puff pastry.
This afternoon we drove to New York for a night at the Excelsior: 15th floor room with a spectacular view of the skyline, ice rink and Museum of Natural History. Anselm and Blaise went out to see Despereaux, while Eliot and I went out for dessert. She, I must say, is a little rattled by travel and hasn't been very easy, especially about sleeping. I asked her over dessert which place she enjoyed most, Florida, Philadelphia or New York. Her answer: "Seattle."
