I had a great time giving a presentation to Anselm's class about Australia today. We covered some geography (did you know that Australia and mainland US are almost identical in area?), geology (why Australia has such a small population despite its size), history (how people got there), and finally zoomed in on the best part, the animals. Quick tour through mammals vs marsupials vs monotremes, with pictures, and then onto the venomous ones-- snakes, spiders and sea creatures. The funnelweb spider can be up to 7cm big, has fangs that are strong enough to puncture a fingernail and can only be pulled off, not shaken. It is aggressive and will attack again and again. Wah!The kids were awesome: entranced, responsive, full of questions and comments but very orderly, raising hands and taking turns. I didn't get to answer a fraction of the raised hands so we might do a second session.
