Our American life

Global anxieties aside, it has been a great week, calm and together at home. Anselm did two camps: a mixed sports one at a field near the Arboretum in the mornings, and a Ravenna art camp in the afternoons. Jessy brought a picnic every day to the sports field to make this manageable, and she and Eliot spent the afternoons playing in a friend's organic children's goods store nearby. Anselm loved both camps, though he thought the sports one was not really serious enough. It had two special highlights: an imaginative boy called David who kept a story running through the week about an underground glass city; and his team winning 13-2 on the last day. I'll post his artwork when I get it on camera.

Today was an idyllic Saturday in the neighbourhood. We woke late, made pancakes; I went for a walk with the kids to Volunteer Park Cafe for my coffee while Blaise took care of some car stuff. On the way back, Anselm dropped in to play at Tova's til Nancy took the two of them up to Volunteer Park to see Alice in Wonderland in this weekend's series of outdoor theatre. Blaise brought the kids home from the park, and later we all headed out for the evening plan (kayaking) which was aborted when we met Gabriel, from the other kinder class, and his parents heading up to the park to see Wind in the Willows. Hanging out with a friend clearly trumps any plan, so the two of them ran circles around each other all the way to the stage, set in a broad sweep of sunlit grass, ringed by trees. We then picnicked on Vietnamese food and repaired to the wading pool. Eliot immediately hit the water, while the boys instead headed for the playground where they spent a happy hour in a mock fight game with two other boys. I love this age-- the effortless formation of play allegiances based on little more than common size, and, possibly, gender. We closed by walking home via Victrola for Blaise's missed coffee and a chocolate macaroon to share.
