Early reading parents

A while ago I read the following, "There are no early reading children, there are early reading parents": a concept with which I completely disagree. Anselm was not interested in learning to read before he was four or five and did not much enjoy the very early stages, only hitting his stride when he was fully fluent. Eliot seems to be unable to help reading-- she gets cross (then laughs at herself) when the car is driving too fast for her to be able to pick out words on signs that she is interested in figuring out. Obviously parents being willing to help things along matters, but is hardly the determining factor.
