This wonderful piece is currently on display at NYU. It was made around 4000BC in the Danube Valley. I learned something of these early sophisticated European cultures on a trip to Bulgaria in 1995 or so, where we happened to visit a display in Varna of the golden treasures from a 5th millenium BC royal grave. The linked article says that the Varna find was only made in 1972 (and the collection has been traveling the world fairly recently: I know Blaise and I have come across it somewhere).
