Nine eleven

We realized what day it is when we noticed the school's flag at half mast this morning. I wonder if they will talk about it at school. We have talked about it to Anselm before and it is very vivid in his mind; he occasionally draws "The twin towers". All the events of that surreal day are certainly vivid in my mind. We were in Trieste and saw the second plane hit and the towers fall live on a TV in a coffee bar, then spent the rest of the day huddled at home with Australian friends trying to maintain reception on the lousy TV in our apartment. The Italian papers the next morning said two things: "25,000 morti!" and "Tutti siamo americani". At least the first turned out to be an exaggeration. The second only became so after a year of Bush.

Coincidentally I'm reading de Lillo's "Falling Man"..

.. but for a harrowing nonfiction account from Ground Zero, read Jessica's.
