I am just back from a visit to the new Howard Hughes institute at Janelia Farm. It is a stunning and surreal construction of glass and gleam: one feels on the set of Solaris. I was glad to have dressed in muted tones of grey, white and pale blue.. almost a silver space suit. The bar (!-- espresso, croissants and hot breakfasts in the morning, alcohol after 5pm) looked more New York than rural Virginia and sported a side room for table tennis, spotlit and with walls painted an urban burnt orange.

The guesthouse was similarly minimalist and boutique: at last a place where my iPhone could feel at home.
