One hundred views of Mt Fuji

One of February's math projects: to assemble one hundred objects. In my first move as an overachieving parent homework helper, we decided to assemble one hundred things from or related to Japan. Here's the result. The banner says "Japan 100" in kanji, we hope. Many of the objects are among the presents I brought home from Kyoto a few years ago: Anselm's preschool bento box, beautiful handmade paper nested boxes, tiny self-righting traditionally dressed dolls, yatsuhashi tins. We got a lot of mileage out of the kirigami Anselm cut in Whistler in December, which doubled as our Christmas decorations and also line the box, making up items 1-25. Anselm has been very into origami lately (thanks to an awesome book Mum brought to Hawaii, containing some of the contemporary advances in the art.. if anyone read that New Yorker article), and the box contains 14 items folded by him, me and Jessy.

To make sure we had a few tiny things to put in in case the household resources ran dry, the kids and I visited Uwajimaya on Friday night with our friends Stefania, Craig, Sophia and Oliver after a fun meal together in Chinatown. Uwajimaya is a real Japanese supermarket, with a paper goods store alongside, and the kids (and silently, mothers) went wild for the intensely, adorably cute little packets of origami paper and tiny folded craft items. Sophia and Anselm had a ball exploring the foods in the supermarket and were keen to try all the odd goodies on post-New Year sale.
