One-shot learning

Eliot continues to acquire words and concepts at a rapid rate and the process does fascinate us, as is probably obvious. All letters seem to be in place-- she loves to tip out the fridge magnet letters from their container, spread them out and look at them. Tonight she named one or two wrongly but corrected herself immediately when I didn't respond. At Whistler while we were buying the boy a crystal she looked at a sign and read out "R-O-C-K-S". Tonight I took out the numbers and laid them in a row off to the side, and counted to ten. She couldn't really see them, and asked "Which is seven?". I held it up and she looked at it calmly and intensely. Ca-chic, memory formation. Her drawing style seems to reflect a desire to write-- she fills page after page with little calligraphic symbols. I don't really get why this is so interesting for her now, as she won't be able to put them together for a long time yet.

Lately she has started using time words: soon, later, tonight, tomorrow, not yet. Indexicals are almost there: she has had "I want" and "My spoon" down for a while, but will still say "Mum, pick you up, please!".

After she was asked her age, I told her "You are sort of half-way between one and two". She looked at me and said "Half. One and half."

She's also taken to calling me Adrienne.

When Max was about Eliot's age, he took a bit of a spill off the edge of the sidewalk into the street. Luckily, his beautiful face was saved by his binky (pacifier)! A bit shaken but not upset, he got up and informed us, "I dropped my me!"
