Multicultural night

Tonight was a whole-school performance for MultiCultural Night. The other kindergarten class did a Japanese harvest dance, while ours performed a short kabuki play, then did a fan dance with their handmade fans. The school is a genuinely diverse environment and that was reflected. The artists in residence this year are a drummer-- a woman from Benin-- and a dancer--a man from South Africa--who led the third graders in some African drummed dances. A group of Mexican students across a range of grades performed to Mexican hip hop. Samson, a Hawaiian student, and his older cousins performed, with gusto, a more than credible version of a Maori haka-- it had the babies crying and the kindergarteners seated at the front screaming with excitement. Mr Key, the music teacher, helped the classes put together a very engaging program, and several of the teachers (including our endlessly talented Ms Luke) and students joined in to provide accompaniment. A very fun evening.

The pictures show Anselm and his best friend Floyd getting ready off-stage; some of his classmates reading the introduction to the class performance, and the dance.
