Last night I attended a house party with Dave Eggers and the remarkable Teri Hein to stimulate interest in the activities of
826 Seattle. In keeping with the other

826's, Seattle's is a space travel supplies store that hides a tutoring service directed at the public schools, particularly focused on writing, which Dave sees not only as a critical academic skill but a necessary route to self-empowerment and active citizenship. A key feature of the 826 mission is to get kids' writing into print. We were sent a copy of one of the student-written books

emerging from the soon to close Thurgood Marshall Alternative School, in which kids discuss their often horribly damaged lives and their reasons for optimism-- quite devastating. Dave's TED wish was to involve a much wider community in activities in the public schools. Hopefully some local readers will join me at a breakfast fundraiser in September.. email me if interested.
