Both kids have their birthdays this month. At 6, Anselm will no longer be allowed to change in the ladies' locker room, so yesterday he insisted on taking himself off to the mens' room to change for swimming. All very brave, but too difficult for a mum waiting anxiously outside.. we'll have to find a way around that. And he swam half way across the pool with his face under water using freestyle strokes-- wow. This morning he went through the school directory, circling the friends in the other kindergarten class that he wants to invite to his party.
Eliot, at 23 months, is already a mature young lady. This morning I asked her if she wanted to come upstairs with me while I got ready, or stay in the kitchen and continue drawing. "Keep drawing", she said cheerfully without looking up, and I heard her all the time I was up there, singing "Ebony and Ivory" and talking to herself about the things she was drawing (large round circles and scribbles representing Mowgli, Bhagheera, Kaa and the love of her little life, Baloo, along with some tiny scribbles that were later identified, retroactively, as "P", "N" and "V").
