Brian and I came across this fascinating object on the way back from lunch the other day. The dedicated oceanographer standing by calibrating it was very happy to tell us really quite a lot about it. It is an unmanned underwater data collection device, battery powered and capable of collecting information from a large number of sensors. There are thousands of these prowling the oceans out there right now, helping to monitor currents, salinity, pH and C02. They were invented at and are maintained through UW (ranked 4th research university in the US!).Tuesday, May 6, 2008
