We just got an emailed Egypt report from the itinerant father figure. He went to Giza and bribed his way into a recently opened tomb, and had camel for dinner! Today the plan was the archaeology museum. When I visited with Mum and Dad in '95 or so, it was a terrible jumble. But I remember vividly the visual shock of reaching the artifacts of Akhenaton's reign-- a brief, beautiful break in a 3000 year ironclad tradition.
Gombrich is such an excellent writer: he has the ability to lead you freshly into the tremendous surprises of history and invention, with appropriate awe.
